do we make our own thread or post in yours? sorry, i'm new No problem. You can definitely make your own introduction topic as you wish, along with anyone else who decides to post here hope to learn a lot here! Same here, as this is probably a surprise, but I actually don't have a ham or short wave radio myself, numbers stations are just really a fascinating thing. So I'll be learning too once I get one and start to tune in to them! (Probably should just have my name be 'Wave Trek', since I'm not currently being a 'trekker' through the airwaves, but oh well...you know...) Welcome aboard!

Ah good, that's working already! Because I've posted on other forums, there, and I've got this mentioned in the description of a YouTube video I did, so I figured you made it here from either that or Proboards. BTW, with one of our few other members on here right now, rob, has a short wave radio, and freaked out when I posted about numbers stations, as he had never heard about them until now. So you may want to post any questions you have in the tech section and they can be waiting for him the next time he shows up, since, knowing him, he doesn't come on every day, he's gone for weeks at a time. So until we get some people on here that can help us out it's something to consider, at least. Oh, and like the avatar, ha ha ;D

No, nothing yet! Sorry! The only thing I could tell you is to check into shortwave radios as a start. You can get them as cheap as $20-30 but it probably wouldn't be that great. (Personally I'm going to spend $100-150 on one, probably...I know they go up as much as $200 at Radio Shack, maybe even higher.) Plus you can start with your basic radio and expand from there as you can/money permits, as I think there's some attachments and all you can add for better reception. Actually you can just go with the old aluminum foil wrapped on wires or coat hangers or whatever and sometimes that'll work. You can even go as far as getting an external receiver too to put up on your roof if you want to increase reception. And that exhausts my knowledge of the subject right there for now until I start learning some more

Well I just learned a few more things...I'm just copying and pasting a bit of some info I got about scanners, which can also be used to pick up numbers stations...
No, scanners are not necessarily cheaper. I paid about $160 for a Bearcat BCT8. It will not get all of the SW bands Since you are mainly interested in the numbers stations, you probably should stick to a standard SW radio because you will get to monitor the full frequency range spread.
So it sounds like a dedicated, full-out short wave radio is really THE way to go with this kind of thing.
Also...
The most popular name in SW radios for the general consumer (as opposed to the serious licensed hobbyist) is Grundig. They range in price from under $100 up.
Also check the Sony ICF-SW7600GR.
Yeah, upon doing research with what Radio Shack has, the one I had settled on (sometime in the future...) was a Grundig (I do believe), at $150. So it seems like a decent brand.
