Somone did this on another forum, and due to going to a lot of trouble with it, figured I would also bring it here...
He asked for any song, any genre. So with the varied kind of music collection I have, I'm sure you'll be surprised at quite a few things!
(Yes, there's more than just metal with the first several ones, but even those have a few surprises to the unknowing!)
Hair/power metal--Rough Cutt "Piece of My Heart"
Great update with crazy solos that have nothing to do with the original, ha ha. Not sure if I ever forgave my mom for not letting me see them live...way back in high school
Death/Thrash metal--Coroner "Masked Jackal"
At least I got to see them live, and get their autographs.
Variety/humor metal--Scatterbrain "Don't Call Me Dude"
I saw these guys live...man they were SHORT! (All of them shorter than me, even!)
Symphonic metal--Therion "Rise of Sodom and Gomorrah"
Wow! Never seen this version before, with full orchestra and choirs!
New wave metal--Platinum Blonde "Doesn't Really Matter"
Still surprises me I was ever able to get this album in the States...ON album!
Christian death metal--Mortification "Terminate Damnation"
Yep, you read that right...just hang out long enough to hear the demonic vomit vocals and be amazed!
Doom metal--Candlemass "Ancient Dreams"
Kind of an updated version of Black Sabbath with an opera singer (yeah, again, you read THAT right!)
Folk metal--Skyclad "The Truth Famine"
One of the earliest and definitely the best, Martin W. is one of THE greatest songwriters ever (better than ME, even! )
Blues--Stevie Ray Vaughan (who else?) "Cold Shot"
Never heard anything like this before or since, and hilarious vid.
Kinda alternative rock...thingy--Big Country "Girl With Grey Eyes"
What is that, like Chinese-sounding guitar? Another song where I've never heard anything like this before or since...still sucks Stuart Adamson killed himself too, all these years later
New wave--Men Without Hats "Safety Dance"
I've got this on vinyl too
Dark ambient--Swartalf "The Shadow Gods"
Really great sampled choir, moody, swirling keyboards...love this piece
New Age--Cusco "Alcatraz"
Lively keyboards and flutes with some rockin' guitar; why this is usually the least favorite of Cusco releases among so-called fans has always been beyond me. Oh well, people suck.
Classical--lotta stuff from RoboCop soundtrack is good
Pop/rock classical--Vanessa Mae "Classical Gas"
She was a 17 year old violin prodigy when she made this...pretty amazing
Rap--Xzibit "Paparazzi"
Classical with rap?! Yeah, but beware, this is the uncensored version
Hell if I know--Primus "John the Fisherman"
Never could figure out what the hell genre Primus goes under, but Les was a GOD of a bass player!
Spanish rock--Soda Stereo "De Musica Ligera"
You can hear old U2, Boston, R. E. M., Big Country on this cd...but it's still a great one
World music--Hevia "Busindre Reel"
Ok, so it's new age again, but Cusco and electronic bagpipes (again, you're reading that right) aren't exactly the same thing!
Current favorite piece--Number Stations "15728"
Go here and give it a listen, although you might want to open up a new window and do something else in the meantime, it's 11 minutes long. Really good moody ambient piece though; they describe themselves as sounding like "crying, laughing, and sobbing", and I agree.
