There's a review page on short wave radios here that's a good place to start. I've settled on the Grundig E5 myself but I haven't gotten one yet, I've heard good things about it and they're like $160 at Radio Shack (actually they had them on sale the other week for only $130; argh!). You can get radios for as little as $30, but I wouldn't get a cheap one if you really want to give this kind of thing a serious shot. Plus you may have to look at getting an external antennae too for better reception, but it depends on conditions and all; just buying a radio by itself might be good enough (especially if you live out in the country without a lot of city crap interfering), especially on clear nights. And sometimes just improvising can cost you almost absolutely nothing, as I saw one comment on a YouTube video where a guy said he got good reception just by wrapping either wires or maybe it was straightened out coat hangers with aluminum foil, and that worked really well for him (!).

~150 is actually the range i was looking for, well actually 200 and under. so that's fine.
I do want to give it a shot and want good equipment but dont know where to look. I'll have a look around our local electronics store on monday or tuesday.
thanks.

~150 is actually the range i was looking for, well actually 200 and under. so that's fine. Yeah that's exactly what I was thinking too when I started getting interested in this thing. I would say it's a good mid-range price but that's actually a bit 'high end' for shortwave radio, but it's still not expensive. And you can just add to it when you can, whether it be an external antennae for another $20-30 or you eventually go 'all the way' and use an antennae that you can put on your roof, or even a short wave tower (as a guy down the street used to have in his back yard). None of the above really breaks the bank either, except for maybe the tower (which I don't even know how much that costs actually, but that could be for a ham radio though). I do want to give it a shot and want good equipment but dont know where to look. I'll have a look around our local electronics store on monday or tuesday. Radio Shack's got quite a few radios. Maybe Frys does, if you have one nearby? They're quite huge and might have them, I don't know. You're welcome!

I just have known the C. Crane Company to build good radios in the past that really stands up through time... There could be better ones out there, I just know C. Crane from experience.
