The 62nd Annual Primetime Emmy Awards announced its nominations today, and there were the usual standards, the shocking surprises, and the snooty snubs. The big stories this year revolve around two comedy n00bs dominating the field, as Modern Family and Glee broke into the genre like the Kool-Aid Man, oh yeahhhhhh!
Both shows were nominated for Best Comedy, Outstanding Writing (both for their pilots), and had a slew of cast members nominated for acting achievements. Because the entire Modern Family cast opted to submit their names as supporting, those two fields were crowded with the show's actors, five in total. Glee landed four acting nominations.
On the drama side, Lost was adequately represented for its final season, tallying five nominations in the major categories—including Best Drama. Mad Men did its usual awards dance, netting eight nominations in the major categories.
Emmy voters made me proud this year with their long overdue recognition of Kyle Chandler and Connie Britton as lead actor and actress for their work on Friday Night Lights. It only took four seasons.
Also of note is the ill-timed nomination for The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien. Jay Leno's name is mysteriously absent from the nominees list.
